Planning to visit Helsinki’s Temppeliaukio Church? Discover the rock-based design, opening hours, and ticket information in one place.
Temppeliaukio Church (finnish: Temppeliaukion kirkko), also known as the Rock Church, stands out as one of Helsinki’s most iconic buildings. Opened in 1969, this remarkable sanctuary is famous for its raw natural materials, stunning acoustics, and the harmony it creates between architecture, light, and sound.
The structure was designed by Finnish architects and brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. Their vision was bold: to carve a place of worship directly into the granite bedrock of the city. Rather than dominating nature, the structure embraces it — letting rough stone, warm copper, and natural light coexist in perfect balance.
The church organ was built by Veikko Virtanen in 1975. It has 43 stops and a total of 3,001 pipes.

Visitors are often struck by the peaceful atmosphere inside. The walls of bare rock absorb noise from outside, creating a serene, almost otherworldly silence. Above, a circular skylight made of 180 glass panels allows sunlight to pour in, subtly shifting throughout the day and enhancing the spiritual feel of the space.
The church is carved into local granite that is nearly two billion years old.
